Four days until Cheltenham 🐎 12:50 - Mar 10 with 2329 viewsThe_Romford_Blue

I’ve plenty of horses for you all but one for now…

For those who like a play at a price, Favour and Fortune is 25/1 for the Champion Bumper. That’s a massive massive price. I’d have him 12s at the most. Two from two in bumpers but if you watch both races back, he travels into it strongly before really picking up in the final furlong. The way he hits the line on both runs is very very taking and you’d have to imagine he’d relish the hill. He’s won on good and soft so the expected rain won’t be too much of a hassle for him whereas plenty in the field will be running on softer going for the first time (the drier weather this season has really proved a challenge for trainers with younger horses and running them). I’m also reliably informed the yard like him as well from my man in the yard. He’s definitely one for each way as there’s a whole field of potential superstars in there but he is another who fits into the category of ‘he could be anything’. He’s just never a 25s poke anyway. He’s worth a bet. 5:30 Wednesday - Favour and Fortune at 25/1 e/w.

My nap of the week for what it’s worth is Gaillard Du Mesnil in the NH Chase. I’d be disgusted if he’s beat. I’ve been backing him steadily all year and he’s a decent four-figure return now. Last race on the Tuesday.

As always I am there for the week with my group but I can confirm I will be doing my previews every day and will be posting the link on here as well.

I used to love Cheltenham week - it creates a cracking atmosphere around the town. Enjoy!

I went on the Thursday last year and we missed our last train home. Booked a 2 man room in the biggest dive of a hotel in town - last room going - £550 - four of us sharing. It had a broken fridge as a cupboard.

It was a magical day up until that point though.

Genuine question, and not looking for an argument. I've made my feelings clear in the past on racing and am not going to jump over your festival thread.

Do they offer odds on deaths for the festival? Cheltenham one of the worst tracks for fatalities I believe?

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

Can't see how that can be a genuine question. No bookie in their right mind would do that.

I’ll answer the question on the off chance it is ‘genuine’ rather than a loaded question. But can you make the same agreement with me that Callie used to have that for my four daily preview threads, they were left alone to discuss the horses rather than racing v anti racing arguments. I came back from the Oaks a few years back, had put up four decent priced winners and yet the five pages for the thread were purely about other stuff from those who don’t like racing.

As for your question, no they do not. A bookie many years ago offered odds on what year the Queen would die. But that’s the only death related market I’ve ever seen or heard of.

Also, as to your point about Cheltenham having high number of deaths, that’s not entirely accurate. Percentage wise it’s no worse than other tracks. But with Cheltenham being the peak of horse racing, most fields are full so the numbers running across the four days is higher than anywhere else. So there may be a death or two (which is still a very sad part of the sport) but it’s still around 1 in every 300 runners die from racing. I consider that something I’ve thought about and chosen to acknowledge and still support seeing as the other 299 that live until 20 or whatever age would never have been bred in the first place without the sport itself. There’s no reason to breed thoroughbred horses without racing. Stick a racehorse on a farm and they wouldn’t be up to the tasks required. If you end racing, you end the breed.

Ted Walsh - ‘If you don’t like racing go watch Peppa Pig. Horses get killed, jockeys get injured. No one knows that better than me watching Ruby. It’s part of the game. The 60 or 70,000 at Cheltenham here yesterday know that. We all know that. Don’t go pandering to the fellas because they want to end the sport altogether. They won’t be happy until there’s no racing’.

I don’t think anyone has denied horses die in racing have they?

It’s more about whether you choose to continue with the sport on behalf of the other thousands a year who are born and spend their lives being treated like royalty doing something they love. If we could have the sport where no horses die at all, we would. But that can never happen. Horses get injured and killed just standing in their box at home. It’s sad but it’s the nature of the beast because they are such fragile creatures.

I thank you for your answer, it was a genuine question as I don't bet and so am unsure on how far things go, but will admit it was also a slightly loaded question as well.

I hadn't intended to post again in the thread, and won't from now, my intention is not to try to create some sort of argument here and will not go near any of your other racing threads.

I hope you have a great week, it's clearly something you love, and while I won't agree with you on the rights and wrongs, you have clearly thought about it and I admire your passion.

Indeed I knew you aren’t a racing fan but you have always at least respected my right to support it. Hence me giving you a proper reply rather than ignoring it.

For me it’s the main week of the whole year and I wouldn’t miss it for the world.

Thanks re the racing threads next week as well. Not that I’d be reading the thread until I’m home each night but it’s still not much fun reading arguments on there afterwards rather than people discussing the best racing anywhere in the world for four days. All the best.

Enjoy it.

I start new job on 20th March so I’m off for the week. I intend to smash into extra place matched betting offers. It’s always a great week with the racing, European football and then the weekend.

To the question above, there are no odds on horse deaths. Although you may consider horse racing unethical there are at least some boundaries when it comes to basic decency.

Truly impaired.

It's vaguely above freezing here (in Cheltenham) and has been snowing/raining for a few days. The ground is quite mushy underfoot. Still snow on the hills.

Thanks for posting, I tend to bet at a minimal cost (free bets & winnings generated from that), but Cheltenham seems to be very profitable with that.

I’m going on Thursday, it’ll be the first time I’ve ever been to horse racing, so looking forward to it, but no idea what to expect.

....just remember that the Festival isn't a true representation of what going racing is normally like.

Obviously the standard of the racing is excellent, albeit a bit "watered down" these days, but the clientele both in terms of numbers and behaviour isn't as excellent.

I hope you have fun though!
